Please Tread On Me
Exercise Room Users - Here are some valuable tips from Consumer Reports about safe treadmill use:
1. Clear the area. Leave free space behind and on either side of the machine so that if you lose your footing you are not pinned against a wall where you
can not get free of the spinning belt.
2. Use the safety key. Keep one end of the key plugged into the machine and the other end clipped
to your clothing. If you fall, the key will be pulled from the machine and the belt will come to a safe stop.
3. Straddle the deck. Before starting place your
feet on the rails on either side of the belt. Then start
the belt at a slow speed before stepping on it to
avoid losing your balance and falling off.
4. Keep your head up. To maintain balance do
not look at your feet or to one side while exercising. Look straight ahead at the console or a distant point.
5. Don't overdo it. Keep track of your heart rate
while exercising. (Consult your doctor for your proper rate.)
6. Come to a complete stop. At the end of
exercise do not leave the machine until it comes to
a complete stop. If there is a problem stop the
machine by pulling out the emergency key you
plugged in earlier.
7. Keep children away. Youngsters have been
injured by accidentally turning machines on and
getting thrown off or coming into contact with the
moving belt.
Other tips include adjusting the incline before
adjusting the speed and not using the machine
with bare feet.
