Kirsop's Korner
The Board of Directors wishes to thank Malcolm and Dagmar Kirsop for their generous gift to the the Community. Malcolm and Dagmar have donated several Dwarf Mugo Pines and Dwarf Amelia shrubs which, as you can see below, have now been planted, with the help of Ruppert Landscaping, on a rapidly eroding sloped area between the retaining wall and the corner of the parking lot alongside Building 3 at 9204 Charleston Drive. Their donation also includes soil improvements, metal retainment edging and rock placements to resolve ongoing drainage issues. Again, thanks to the Kirsops for this lovely gift-of-green. From now on we'd like to call it "Kirsop's Korner".

An Exchange Of Thanks
Perhaps you remember the story and photos below that we posted last last Summer on these pages. To show our gratitude to the Cubs our community recently sent the Cub Pack a cash contribution for their consistent and diligent work in helping us keep our struggling trees watered. Now, in return, the Cubs have sent Paula Julian, who organized this effort, the following thank you note. Paula said, ". It was nice to hear they will be glad to help again in the future."
Happy New Year Paula,
Thank you so very much for the card and the donation. We certainly enjoyed giving back to the community.
The Scouts need opportunities like this to learn why we are teaching them these values.
I must apologize for the busy schedule, and trying to coordinate things should be easier.
We are having a Pack Picture taken at our Blue and Gold banquet and I'll bring you a copy for the community. after we get them made.
If you guys have any other things the cub scouts need to help with, let us know.
Thank you and Happy New Year!

Our Thirsty Trees and Shrubs Get A Drink From The Cub Scouts
In a preview of what's to come two Cub Scouts from Pack 1355 in Manassas showed up on Sunday, June 25th to help keep the grounds of The Gatherings green. In their yellow Pack shirts they are from left to right Jonathan Cantwell age 8 and Brandon Albers also age 8. The young lady supervising and helping with their work is Brandon's sister Taylor age 9. The youngster's work is part of an agreement in which the Cubs and soon, a Boy Scout contingent associated with the nearby Grace United Methodist Church, will be on the grounds to water our trees and bushes. The Scouts are pursuing merit badges for their volunteer work.
In the top photo you can see a few of the Landscape Committee's newly purchased Alligator Bags filled with the water the Scouts hosed in. As the bags slowly leak out they will be refilled by the Scouts to provide hydration for the newly planted trees and shrubs on our grounds. Thank you Scouts for a job well done.

The Rest Is Yours
After much research and discussion this little four-legged fella showed up on our doorstep today. We are sure there will be many candidates who would like to take a seat on this bench.
Thank you Landscape Committee.
Not too long ago the Gatherings grounds at Buildings 1,2 and 3 were nothing more than piles of construction debris. After the basic greenery was put in by the builder a beautification minded group of residents volunteered to ensure that the new plantings would survive and flourish. Working with a modest budget, authorized by our Board of Directors, this Landscape Committee added to the original plantings a bevy of young, beautiful trees and bushes. One hundred forty-four of them were planted this fall and will need at least three years of attention to establish the deep root systems they need to get through hot dry spells with minimal watering help.
The Committee, under its first Chairperson Dagmar Kirsop, undertook the enormous and time-consuming work of nursing the existing plants, buying the new ones, fertilizing, pruning, weeding, watering and even getting approvals from the Manassas City Planners. Our thanks to these community volunteers who wield the hoes and hoses.

This spring the new plantings around Buildings 4 and 5 will need volunteers to water them. Right now we pay $65 per hour to a company to do it - reflected in our monthly assessments. If interested in helping give Board of Directors Vice President, Malcolm Kirsop a call.
