Gas Leaks
Recently, Board of Directors Secretary Kay Witt sent out an e-mail with information about devices that can detect a gas leak in our units. She suggested plugging-in an electronic sniffer that would sound an alarm if it detected a small amount of cooking gas escaping from the stove. One of the most common causes of a gas leak, besides a fault in the piping, is the accidental turning on of one of the stove's knobs. It only takes a slight turn into the "on" position to release gas without igniting the flame. Our units are particularly vulnerable to this kind of mishap because of the placement of the microwave oven over the stove. They are high enough to cause some of us to lean into the stove and brush up against a knob when placing or retrieving an item from the microwave. An unfortunate result of this "leaning" could be an extremely dangerous gas leak.
A way to prevent this from happening is to "adult proof", "child proof" and "animal proof" the stove's knobs. Yes, not only adults and children, but animals such as dogs and cats have been known to turn the knobs just enough to start a gas leak.
Many websites, including Amazon,Target, Walmart, plus Bed Bath and Beyond feature clear plastic safety caps that fit over the knobs to prevent accidental turning.
The cap's cover is removed when you need to operate the stove and snapped back on when you want safety. Also, the clear plastic does little to interfere with the stove's design. Check them out. Search the web for "stove knob covers". They run under $10 for a set of five.
